Turkey Day

Ava's first Thanksgiving today! Last Sunday we discovered a 5th tooth in her mouth, so she was ready to eat all the great food. It's been fun now that she is completely on real food; she gave up on her baby food several weeks ago, which I agree with her on that because I've tasted all of her food. So far she has been accepting of just about everything we have fed her. She did seem to have an allergic reaction to peas, but that is all. Last week, when making grilled cheese sandwiches, I made one just for her. How fun!

Cold

Ava and I shared a cold last week.  There has been much debate at home and at work concerning who gave the cold to whom.  Of course, I am the only person saying Ava gave it to me.  It was rough on her because she didn't sleep as well at night and being uncomfortable and tired all the time made her a little grouchy.  (That sounds like me since I tend to get cranky when I'm not feeling well.  I say I'm working on it, but probably not doing a good job).  She discovered she hates having her nose wiped and will fight as much as she can.  One sad part, which is kinda funny too, is she had a sore throat that made her lose her voice a little bit and sound sort of scratchy.  I felt bad for her that whole time.  The good thing, though, about sharing a cold is I knew when she started feeling better because I started feeling better since we showed the same symptoms at the same time.  I still think she gave it to me because she actually started showing symptoms before me.

Fun Weekend, One Incident

Ava and I had such a great time together this weekend.  Lindsey worked very hard for the Young Women's garage sale (and got up several times with her the night before) so I had her with me.  Because of getting up several times during the night, she didn't wake up until 10:00 Saturday morning.  She was hungry but in a good mood.  I got her dressed then took her to the garage sale to help move heavy items for customers.

A cold front came through the previous day, so it was pretty cold during the day.  Every once in a while Ava sat in the back seat of the car to get out of the wind and to warm up a bit.  I took out the base of her car seat and put in down on the floor board to give us more room.  While there, she fell backwards and hit her head on the base pretty hard, twice.  She had two knots on the back of her head that were very tender for a while.  I have a hard time describing how I felt and, although everyone gets bumps and bruises throughout life, I worried about her.  By Sunday, though, the two swelled spots went down and she did great during church and throughout the day.

Another Milestone

Ava started crawling last night!  She was sitting in the middle of the floor when we turned our backs on her momentarily.  When looking back at her, she had moved about 5 feet away from where she was and wondered how she moved over there so quickly.  After replacing her in the original spot, I kept an eye on her.  When she got up onto her hands and knees, I told Lindsey to look at her just in time for both of us to witness her crawl about 3 feet.  How fun to see her growing up even though we know that we will probably be trying to keep up with her for several years.

Gone a Week

When Hurricane Rita blew through here, the electricity went out and did not come back on for 6 days.  The first night we were okay because of the cooler weather, but once the storm passed us, the air turned hot.  So much that Ava had trouble sleeping, so she and Lindsey went to College Station for the week while I stayed to work in the relief efforts.  The house had been messy because of painting projects and, with the storm, we had not cleaned up completely.  With the electricity out, I spent most of my time away from the house.  When I was at home, I only worked on Ava's room, putting away clothes and straightening toys.  By the next Saturday, I finally made it to College Station, but she was napping when I got there.  Of course, I immediately went to get her when she woke up and she gave me a little smile to see me come into the room.  Picking her up, I learned she had grown quite a bit because she was definitely heavier.  Since coming home, she had been very much more active in moving herself around and trying to grab anything she can see.  I bet she will be crawling within the next week or so.

Sound of the Week

It seems Ava comes up with a new sound every week.  Once she had this screech that she liked because the first time she tried it out, both Lindsey and I ran over to her (she was in her high chair) to see what was the matter, so she continued with it.  We had some friends come over that said they could hear her from outside.

This week she makes some sort of growling noise.  I noticed it before whenever I tickle her tummy but now she seems to do it on her own as she plays.  Joe Roberts really got a kick out of hearing her when we were up at the church the other night.

Speaking of church, we think she is very musically inclined because she will make noises during the hymns, then stop once the hymns are over.  Sometimes at home it seems she does this when the radio is on, too.  She also has a tendency to talk during prayers or when I received a blessing the other night from our hometeacher.  I love seeing her grow and explore her sounds and movements.  I look forward to being able to talk with her and chase her around but I know when that day comes, I will miss her babbling and only being able to roll around.

Daddy/Daughter Dates

Ava and I have so much fun together when Lindsey leaves the house for a few hours.  Last night was Lindsey's book club meeting.  When she left, Ava had fallen asleep in my lap.  We went into the game room to watch some TV until she woke up, which she did immediately.  The rest of the evening we sat on the floor playing with toys and practicing sitting and standing.  Ava really likes to sit up so she can better see what's going on around her.  She is so cute when she lifts her head and shoulders up off the ground (doing little crunches) when she's lying down.  By holding her hands above her head while she sits, she will pull up until she is standing and will turn her head as far as it will go to take in the new view.

I'm grateful for the time we spend together in the evenings and on the weekends and I'm glad she enjoys being with me.

First plane ride

What gave me anxiety about our trip to Yellowstone National Park was the flight to Salt Lake City. The last leg of my return trip from Argentina was difficult for a young set of parents because the changing air pressure hurt their infant's ears so much she cried all the way from Chicago to Dallas. We made sure to have a bottle ready for Ava so that the sucking motions would pop her ear drums as the cabin pressure changed. To my relief she traveled extremely well with no problems (other than getting fussy when I didn't get her bottle to her quickly enough.)

Little Games

Last night Ava and I came up with a fun game: she sits in her high chair and I walk up to slowly moving my head back and forth making funny noises until I kiss her on the neck, which she finds ticklish. She laughs and laughs as I do this. I got tired of doing it after a little while, but I continued playing because I love to hear her laugh and to see her big smile.

Growing Up

Ava interacts so much with her environment now. She will turn her head towards the person speaking in a room, or she will gaze around looking for me while I stand at the pulpit at church. I absolutely love to find her looking at me from across the room, then smiling when our eyes meet.
When she is lying on the ground, I like to put my face close to hers so she can reach me with her little hands. She likes to grab my nose or chin and can get a surprising good, strong grip on the skin on my neck.

She does pretty good in different surrounds with groups of people. There are times, though, when she needs to adapt before going to someone other than us. I felt bad one evening while meeting my family at a restaurant in College Station because Ava cried and cried when she saw my mom. We also have learned to maintain low volumes of sound when together with others. This last weekend we hosted the 2nd Annual Kennedy Reunion and we upset her a number of times when laughing at funny stories or her goofy Granddad.

First Father's Day

One of the fun traditions I have learned to adopt by marrying into the Kennedy family is to share gifts for every existing holiday and Lindsey does this very well, so for many years, we have given gifts to each other for Mother's Day and Father's Day although not yet parents. Ava's birth, of course, made this year more special for us.

Lindsey brought Ava in to wake me this morning to wish me a happy Father's Day. Seeing her smiling, bubbly face warmed me inside and I held her as much as I could today because she and Lindsey are still in College Station where we spent the weekend. I had to come back to Nacogdoches alone tonight to go to work tomorrow and won't see them until Wednesday.

It amazes me to experience new feelings as a parent. It is commonly said that one cannot understand the love a parent has for a child until one becomes a parent, and that is true. The new feeling I encountered tonight came as I said goodbye to my wife and child. At just under 4 months old, I realized Ava has not yet developed to the point of understanding my absense. When I come home from work, or take her from her crib when she wakes in the morning, she smiles and giggles when she sees me, but when our eyes met as I climbed into the car, I could see that she was not sad that I was leaving, she simply smiled. As sad as I was to leave me little family, that realization made me feel even sadder. I wonder, though, if she does think of me at this stage of her development.

Blessing Day

With General Conference the first weekend of April, our fast and testimony meeting moved the Easter Sunday. The timing worked out well to have Patrick participate in the blessing while he had a couple of weeks home from Iraq. We considered other Sundays because we wanted co-workers to come as well, and we knew most had plans with their own families on Easter. All the men in the family were able to attend: my dad, Scott, Lynn, Aaron, Jacob and Patrick.

Through the week prior to this idea, I spent much time on my knees for the spirit to give me the words for Ava to begin her mortal life.

After giving her a name, I told her she has brought so much joy into the lives and a great number of people, many of whom had not met her yet, and that she should spend her life striving to bring joy to everyone around her. She was blessed to have a testimony of the restored gospel in the latter days and to know and understand the scriptures. I blessed her to participate in all of the ordinances of the gospel from baptism through marriage in the temple. (Lindsey commented to me later that she thought I would bless her to be sealed in the temple with a worthy companion, however, I purposely avoided that language because I try to keep cliches out of blessing).

During the blessing, emotion overcame me as I could feel the love of our Heavenly Father filling the chapel. Later that morning, Kelsey (who held the microphone during the prayer) came to me and commented about how I got choked up during the blessing. All I could say in response was that he would understand when he became a father.

I'm A Dad!!!

At 12:30 p.m. on February 22, 2005, Ava came into our family at 7 lbs 12 oz and 21 inches long. She was the first of several children (we haven't really determined a definite number yet). We arrived at the hospital 12 hours earlier excited about becoming parents and totally clueless at the same time. The staff hooked Lindsey up to several monitors and an IV and she tried to get some sleep between the contractions. I tried sleeping on the little couch thing, if it can be called a couch.

Around 5 a.m. they began giving her petocin to regulate the contractions. She always said she was a believer in the epidural, but the epidural turned out to be the most painful part of the process leading up to birth.

From midnight that night until about 11:30 a.m., I felt useless, although I knew that just being in the room with her helped Lindsey. About that time, the contractions were one minute apart, and all the breathing exercises we learned about in the birthing classes kicked in. Instead of sitting off to the side watching my wife cycle through the pain, I felt like I was taking part of the birthing process. In fact, once the doctor arrived, she didn't say much of anything at all except for encouraging Lindsey to keep going.

For several months prior to this time, I wondered how I would react in the birthing room. Lots of stories floated around about tough guys getting all queesy. Not me, though. I found the experience fascinating. Watching Ava come into this life immediately connected me to her and certainly brought me closer to Lindsey.

Once the nurse took Ava to the table to clear out the fluids and do all the initial checks, I could only stare at this little girl. I felt like a kid in a store with lots of cool stuff to look at but being told not to touch anything. Lindsey gently reminded me to talk to her so she could recognize my voice.

For the next two days, I thought a lot about who I am and what I have done in my life. When I had a chance to watch Ava in the nursery by myself, I offered up a prayer promising to be a better man for my wife and my child. And I hope I will be.
